Learning for Life: Growing Together as Citizens of the World

Learning for Life at Heath Hayes Academy is a carefully crafted personal development curriculum that nurtures the whole child—emotionally, socially, morally, and culturally. It is a bespoke journey that empowers pupils to understand themselves, respect others, and thrive as responsible, compassionate citizens in a diverse and ever-changing world.

At the heart of Learning for Life is a commitment to developing pupils’ understanding of citizenship and PSHE. Children explore themes such as relationships, health, wellbeing, and safety, building the knowledge and skills they need to make informed choices and lead positive lives. The curriculum encourages open dialogue, reflection, and empathy, helping pupils to navigate challenges and celebrate successes with confidence and resilience.

Our approach is deeply rooted in promoting British Values—democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are not taught in isolation but are embedded throughout the curriculum, creating a culture of respect, fairness, and inclusion. Pupils learn to appreciate diversity, challenge discrimination, and contribute positively to their communities.

SMSC development—spiritual, moral, social, and cultural—is woven into every aspect of Learning for Life. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their beliefs and values, consider ethical dilemmas, and engage with the wider world through meaningful experiences. This approach supports their growth as thoughtful, reflective individuals who understand the importance of kindness, justice, and community.

A key focus of the curriculum is raising awareness of protected characteristics. Pupils learn about equality and inclusion, exploring topics such as race, gender, disability, religion, and sexual orientation in age-appropriate ways. This helps foster a safe and respectful environment where every child feels seen, valued, and empowered to be themselves.

Learning for Life is more than a subject—it is a foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth. It equips pupils with the tools to flourish both within and beyond the classroom, preparing them to be active, informed, and compassionate members of society.

Our classes create a Learning for Life Floorbook to travel with their cohort through school, documenting their personal development journey.
